Our team and mission
During this two-year research fellowship you will report to the Head of the Science Section in the Green Solutions Division within the Climate Action, Sustainability and Science Department. The Science Section leads EO research and Earth system science activities, partnering with European and international scientific groups. The goal is to maximise scientific impacts of missions and respond to major scientific challenges outlined in the ESA science strategy.
The Earth System Science Hub provides a platform for collaboration and development of the next generation of EO products, including Digital Twin Earth, an advanced high‑resolution replica of our planet.
Responsibilities
- Advance EO methods, algorithms and products by undertaking advanced research addressing observational gaps and scientific priorities, focusing on new Earth Explorers and Sentinel expansion missions.
- Enhance understanding of the Earth system using the latest EO technology to address major science challenges.
- Develop advanced reconstruction of the Earth system, contributing to Digital Twin Earth through collaborative research across domains and improving EO use for simulations, predictions and what‑if scenarios.
- Support definition, technical supervision and coordination of scientific exploitation projects carried out by external teams of experts in all areas of EO research and Earth system science.
- Engage in at least one of the following thematic priorities: Data‑driven and AI‑based Earth system simulations, Hydrology and water cycle research, Terrestrial carbon and ecosystems, Polar science and cryosphere research, Ocean science with a focus on the Mediterranean.

Education
You should have recently completed, or be close to completion of, a PhD in a related technical or scientific discipline. Preference will be given to candidates within five years of receiving their PhD. For this position a PhD in physics, engineering or Earth system and climate science with relevant research experience and peer‑reviewed publications is required.
Additional Requirements
- Solid practical knowledge of advanced EO data processing, especially concerning ESA and/or Copernicus missions.
- Ability to interface with the scientific community, international partners and external scientific actors.
- Advanced programming skills (HPC), advanced mathematics methods, data analytics techniques and/or Earth system and climate modelling, as well as advanced AI methods.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work independently and in a multicultural team environment.
