Summary Educational Aids/Technicians (CYP Assistants) work directly with children and youth, keeping them actively engaged, well‑cared for, and safe while participating in the CYP. The assistant’s day includes helping children develop social skills, make healthy choices, build self‑help and school readiness skills, and explore their environment.

Responsibilities

Develop schedules and activity plans, review and provide input into plans prepared by other aides.

Ensure program plans meet the observed needs of individual children and youth.

Implement activities and special events that meet physical, social, emotional, and cognitive needs, including special instructions from parents.

Prepare and implement program options for children with special requirements and provide care as directed by the supervisor.

Demonstrate, instruct, lead, and facilitate planned and spontaneous program activities.

Model developmentally appropriate practice and classroom/activity area management techniques.

Promote and model safety, fitness, health, and nutrition practices.

Arrange for and/or serve appropriate snacks or meals.

Prepare, arrange, and maintain indoor and outdoor activity areas and materials.

Set up displays and bulletin boards; inventory equipment and recommend replenishment.

Secure supplies, equipment, and facilities.

Establish a program environment that sustains participant interest and promotes positive interactions.

Interact with children and youth using approved guidance and youth development techniques.

Provide care, supervision, oversight, and accountability in compliance with DoD, NAF Component, and local policies.

Maintain control of and account for whereabouts and safety of children and youth.

Supervise during indoor/outdoor activities, field trips, outings, and special events.

Ensure authorized departure according to parental instructions.

Observe for signs of illness, abuse, or neglect and report as directed; act as a mandatory reporter where required.

Interact professionally with employees, parents, and local command personnel.

Provide parents with daily verbal or written feedback about their child/youth or program activities.

Participate in conferences with parents and employees.

Observe and document developmental progression and concerns; use information in planning.

Participate in program evaluation using designated instruments such as rating scales, risk assessment tools, and accreditation tools.

Assist in achieving and maintaining DoD certification and national accreditation.

Report health, fire, and safety concerns to the supervisor.

Collect, maintain, and report program participation data.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Complete required training certificates and maintain certifications required by federal, state, or national accreditation institutions used in DoD Child and Youth Programs.

Pass all applicable records and background checks.

Undergo pre‑employment and random drug testing; a positive result or failure to submit will result in withdrawal of a tentative job offer.

Pass a pre‑employment physical examination and provide evidence of immunization; be free of communicable diseases.

Ability to sustain considerable walking, standing, bending, stooping, and lifting up to 40 pounds.

Male candidates born after December 31, 1959, and at least 18 years of age must certify registration with the Selective Service System.

Eligible candidates must possess a No‑Fee Passport, Sponsor's Orders or Command‑sponsorship authorization, and a sojourner's permit/application letter.

Qualifications

Entry Level (CY‑1702‑01): Effective English communication (oral and written), ability to follow instructions, complete DoN training requirements, and promote effective working relationships with children, youth, and coworkers.

Intermediate Level (CY‑1702‑01): All Entry Level abilities plus six months experience with children or youth, knowledge of child development principles, ability to implement developmentally appropriate practices, interpret curriculum plans, plan and organize, and promote effective relationships.

Target Level (CY‑1702‑02): All Entry and Intermediate abilities plus one year experience, deeper knowledge of development principles, skill to implement high‑quality care and education, and the ability to work cooperatively as a team member.

Education

At least a high school diploma or equivalent. GED or college transcripts may be accepted as evidence of degree.

For Entry Level, high school diploma or equivalent is required.

For Intermediate Level, same requirement plus six months experience and completion of Navy Entry Level training or equivalent.

For Target Level, one year experience and either completion of DoD standardized training courses, a valid Child Development Associate (CDA) or Military School‑Age (MSA) credential, or a minimum 2‑year degree in Early Childhood Education or related field.

Employment Conditions & Background Checks

Positive drug test for marijuana (or any other drug tested for) results in withdrawal of the tentative job offer and ineligibility to apply for a DoD position for 6 months.

Completion of all background checks for child care positions, including fingerprint checks, Tier 1 Child Care check, State Criminal History Repository check, and an Installation Records Check.

Applicants will be automatically disqualified for convictions involving a sexual offense, child victim, or felony drug offense, or for negligent civil adjudication concerning a child.

Participation in Direct Deposit/Electronic Fund Transfer is required.
